Southern California--I haven't been many
places, but from what I've seen, read, and heard, I can't imagine
living anywhere else--at least not permanently. I hear the following
statement quite often, but the truth of it remains: Where else can you
visit the beach, the mountains, and the desert--all between sunup and
sundown?
I don't think there is anything as beautiful as a
snow-draped mountain glittering against the deep blue skies, the kind
of skies you only see above 6,000 feet. But then again, you take that
same blue, but this time it's water. Now it's the ocean sparkling
against a light blue sky, with white-capped waves foaming against white
sand sea shores.
Wrightwood (my home mountain) has some of the most amazing sunrises I've ever seen, and I've watched scores of sunsets trace silver pathways into the pacific ocean, and every time it's mind boggling light show of pink, yellow, orange, purple, and red--like someone electrified 50 billion tons of rainbow sherbet.
The
mountains and the beach are my two favorite places. I can appreciate
beauty in just about any place, but these are far and away the
champions. Furthermore, my inadequate descriptions don't even scratch
the surface of what I've seen, heard, felt, and experienced in these
two places. I'm even sure if words can convey the things I see with the
eyeball in the back of my brain. The water and the snow. The sand and
the trees. The rising and setting sun. Find them in Southern
California. There's no other place I'd call home.
